Leading-edge self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) resist fraying, friction damage, and breaking when used over a sharp leading edge, such as a rooftop. They can be tied off overhead, at shoulder level, or at foot level. SRLs connect a worker's safety harness to an anchor point on a building or structure to stop the worker from free-falling and help prevent injury if he or she goes over the edge. SRLs attach to the D-ring on the harness and extend and retract as the worker moves freely. If the worker starts to fall, the SRL will brake suddenly to stop the fall. Energy-absorbing webbing at the end of the lifeline helps absorb the force of the fall. SRLs let workers move farther away from an anchor point than would be possible with shock-absorbing lanyards. They usually stop a fall within 2 to 4 ft. and require less fall clearance than shock-absorbing lanyards.
