Macerating toilets provide sanitation in rooms where standard waste line connections are out of reach. Also called upflush toilets, they look like typical tank-and-bowl toilets, but don't require a direct connection to a waste line or extensive modification to existing plumbing. They use an electric-powered macerating unit that shreds solid waste and pumps the flushed contents through a small-diameter discharge pipe connected to the main drain line. Macerating toilets can typically be installed within 100 to 150 ft. horizontally and 10 to 15 ft. vertically of the main drain line, depending on the pumping power of the macerator. They're ideal for low-traffic spaces where they don't need to function as a primary toilet.
