Self-Retracting Lifelines
Self-retracting lifelines, or SRLs, connect a worker's full-body safety harness to an anchor point to arrest falls. They allow the worker to move freely by extending and retracting with the worker as they move. If the worker starts to fall, the SRL will brake to stop the fall and absorb the energy, typically within 2 to 4 feet. from the start of the fall. They require less clearance and allow the worker to move farther away from the anchor point than would be possible with a shock-absorbing lanyard. They are commonly used by people working at heights in the construction, manufacturing, welding, utilities, transportation, and oil and gas industries.
