Integrated-rescue self-retracting lifelines (SRLs) can be used to raise or lower workers if they fall while working in a high place. The SRLs connect a worker's full-body safety harness to an anchor point on a building or structure to stop the worker from free-falling and help reduce the risk of injury in the event of a fall. They attach to the D-ring on the back (dorsal) of the worker's safety harness and extend and retract as the worker moves freely. If the worker starts to fall, the SRL will brake suddenly to stop the fall and absorb its energy. SRLs let the worker move farther away from the anchor point than would be possible with a shock-absorbing lanyard. They typically stop a fall within 2 to 4 ft. and require less fall clearance than a shock-absorbing lanyard. Integrated-rescue SRLs are used in wind energy, emergency, confined space, and oil and gas industry applications where standard ground or descent rescue is difficult or dangerous.
