Dye Penetrant Testing
Dye penetrant testing is a type of nondestructive testing (NDT) that reveals weld surface breaks, pits, and cracks by applying a liquid penetrant and developer. The area is first cleaned with a precleaner to remove surface contaminants that can interfere with testing. A visible dye is applied to the area and allowed to sit (or dwell) on the surface for several minutes to give the dye time to penetrate cracks and imperfections. Excess dye is then cleaned away and a developer is applied. The developer pulls remaining dye from the crack to highlight areas of concern.
Standard grade visible dye penetrant is a red dye, solvent removable penetrant which indicates surface flaws against white developer powder background. Meets ASME section V halogen and chloride content requirements.
